I grew up loving Chess and respecting other older board games. Every once in a while, I'd find ones that I thought were good.īut I was convinced that these were the exceptions, and I was definitely convinced that any older, traditional games were stupid.
This was the period in which I thought that card games sucked. I discovered Euro games, became part of a public group, moved, helped form new groups, ran my own public group for a while. Gaming was sporadic as I was working full time, schooling full time, and procreating full time. I discovered new games and eventually discovered BGG, but this period was probably dominated by early-marriage word games like Boggle and discovering games like Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne. In college, I played Magic a few times, but don't remember ever playing any card games with anyone.Īfter college, I eventually went back to graduate school while starting a new family. This period was dominated by Magic and also by Chess, both often played multiple times daily, but also included more Ameritrash-type stuff like Buck Rogers in the 25th Century This period was dominated by so many mass market board games, favorites being Stratego and HeroQuest. Rummy (my dad taught us Rummy, but I mostly remember actually playing Rummikub) Here's my abbreviated personal history with card games: I played a ton of games growing up, even a few traditional deck card games, but I didn't play any trick-taking games, no, not even one. This is something that I'm always interested in.
